Got Questions? We’ve Got (Mostly Sensible) Answers
Below you'll find answers to the questions we get asked the most — and yes, we've heard them all!
🛻 Do we have to buy our own car?
Yes, this is a true DIY adventure! You're responsible for buying your own banger. Just remember: your car must cost no more than £1,500 — receipts may be checked, so no sneaky supercars in disguise!
🛡️ Do we need our own insurance and breakdown cover?
Absolutely. You’ll need valid insurance and breakdown cover — and you’ll need to show proof of both before we let you hit the road. You're on an adventure, not a gamble.
🗺️ Do we have to follow the same route as everyone else?
We highly recommend it. We've spent time curating a scenic, challenge-filled route with amazing views and hilarious stop-offs. You’re free to stray, but don’t blame us if you miss something epic (or end up at a motorway service station instead of a castle).
🔧 Once I’ve got my car, can I improve it?
Sure! We encourage you to make it roadworthy — safety first. A pre-rally check-up with a mechanic is a great idea. You can spend as much as you like on repairs, but the purchase price must stay at or under £1,500. And sorry, no external modifications (think neon lights, spoilers, or jet engines) — we’re keeping it fair and fun!
😬 What if my car breaks down?
That’s part of the fun (and the challenge). You're responsible for your own breakdown cover, recovery, and continuing the journey. Think of it as character-building. Our support team might be able to help — if they're nearby — but don't count on a rescue mission in the middle of nowhere. Pack snacks.
🏨 Do I need to book my own accommodation?
Yes, your team is in charge of your entire trip — that includes accommodation, petrol, food, snacks, and your return journey. (Spoiler: yes, you do have to go home eventually.)
💥 Can I have my car crushed after the event?
If you’ve truly had enough of your banger and it’s beyond saving, yes — you're welcome to scrap it. Just remember: it’s your responsibility.
👥 Why can we only have four people in a car?
Because most cars only have four seatbelts. Safety first!
🔋 How big can my engine be?
To help reduce emissions and keep things somewhat eco-friendly, we ask that youwe ask that you consider an engine size no bigger than 2 litres.. It's not Top Gear — it's feel-good fundraising.
🚗 Will we be driving in convoy each day?
Not exactly. We'll set off together from Chesterfield, and we’ll convoy into Whitby at the finish line for the big finale. Along the route, you’ll be taking part in fun challenges and making your own way — at your own pace. This isn't a race, so no need to channel your inner rally driver.
🛠️ Will there be a support vehicle?
Yes! We’ll have a support vehicle with a mechanic and crew following the route and checking in at key points. They’ll help if they’re close — but with 50 teams on the road, you still need your own breakdown cover. This isn’t the AA… it’s Bangers and Cash!
